Open Lecture The Alchemical Process of Depression

Jung’s fascination with alchemical symbolism, and the unconscious provides us with the tools to understand our own psychological processes. A path is opened to transform the dark night of soul into a meaningful, enlightening experience. In order to accomplish this, the ego must undergo its own death and rebirth.

Depression as a Progressive Force

Carl Jung was an advocate of depression as a positive force. As you know, he

transformed his own struggle with depression as he was experiencing a break-up with Freud. Jung’s personal confrontation with the unconscious led him to the conclusion that “depression, as all other psychological symptomatology has a telos at its core – a latent purpose – if one can understand purposefully.”

Breaking into small groups, we will explore and discuss Jung’s idea that depression has a latent purpose. Each group will then have the opportunity to share their thoughts and conclusions with the whole group.

Experiential Seminar

The Meaning in Depression

Getting to the core of a depression is usually an unconscious enforcement of

introversion. In other words, depression is an introverted illness, however, it is not just an illness in and of itself, rather, it has a meaning. By this I mean, the depression wishes to convey a psychic condition within the client. When one is depressed one should go into the depression itself. If the depression feels dark then go into the darkness. Be with it and ask the depression its meaning – what does it want to say.

In this part of the seminar, we will break into small groups and explore the meaning of depression, while also reflecting on the following questions:

1. From where does the depression come from

2. What does it wish to teach me

3. What purpose does it serve in my life

09:00 – 11:00 Open Seminar Imagination: The Creativity of Soul

We process within us a sublime force of immeasurable power, which when we handle it unconsciously it becomes detrimental to us. If on the contrary, we direct it in a conscious and creative manner, it will give us the mastery of ourselves. Sadly, the vast majority don’t fully understand the creative role it plays in every aspect of every one’s life. The force of which I speak is the power of our imagination the creative spark within us, or which I refer to the seeing power of Soul.

During this seminar, we will do an imaginative exercise with the theme, “every thought is an imagination”. The purpose of the exercise is to see how we can use the power of our imagination to help us gain insight into problem solving. We will break into small groups and share experiences and/or insights gained from the exercise. A few volunteers will be called upon to share their experience with the whole group.
